Material and Compostability

CPLA begins as polylactic acid made from renewable plant starch and then goes through a crystallising step, which turns it from a soft film into a rigid material that can be moulded into a lid. That is what holds the dome above the drink and keeps the sip opening in shape rather than collapsing as the cup is carried, so nothing changes for the counter team. The compostability of this grade is referenced against EN 13432 and ASTM D6400. In the cradle-to-gate comparison we publish, PLA is listed at 0.5 kg CO2 eq per kg of polymer, against 1.7 for PP and LDPE, 2.0 for PET and 2.2 for PS — the figure that most often supports a sustainability conversation with a customer or a head office. In daily service the lid goes on and comes off just like the plastic lid it replaces.

Where These Lids Work

  • Speciality coffee counters — hot paper cups are covered with one firm press before they leave the bar, so the queue keeps moving.
  • Catering and events — lids go on at the service table, so trays of coffee can be handed out without capping each cup by hand.
  • Drive-through and kiosk windows — the lid presses on with one hand while the other holds the cup, which matters where staff work at speed.
  • Distributors and paper cup suppliers — the compostable lid works as a separate line beside the cups a café already buys, so cup and lid can ship together.
  • Cafés building a plant-based menu — a compostable takeaway lid supports the message without changing how drinks are served.

Fit, Handling and What to Confirm

  1. Match the lid to the cup rim rather than the cup body — the lid grips the outside edge at the top, so the diameter you order follows that measurement.
  2. Order one lid size for each cup size you run, so a regular and a large cup each get their own lid line.
  3. Keep every diameter in its own marked carton in the store room, so the counter team reaches for the right lid at the morning peak.
  4. Press each lid fully down and keep cups upright in carriers and on courier runs — the lid covers the drink, it does not seal it.
  5. Test a free sample on your own cup before you commit; samples are supplied free of charge and the buyer covers the freight.
  6. Allow around 20 days for production once the order is confirmed and the advance payment is received, with the balance settled before shipment.
  7. Lids travel loose in bulk cartons, so tell us the carton and pallet format your warehouse needs before the run is scheduled.

Who These Lids Are For

Four kinds of buyers keep these lids on repeat order. Café and coffee chain operators want a lid that presses on one-handed during the morning rush, and a plant-based option that lets the takeaway cup line change without changing service. Distributors and wholesalers buying across a wholesale food packaging range stock several cup sizes and prefer one lid line per rim diameter, shipped with the cups. Private-label and consumer brands use the white and black lids as a plain base for custom design and logo printing. Catering and event suppliers order bulk cartons for seasonal peaks and test a free sample against the cups they already hold.

FAQ

Q1. Which diameter should we order for our cups?

The lid grips the cup rim, so the size you order follows the rim of the cup you serve in rather than the cup body — measure across the top edge at its widest point. Tell us which cup you use, or send the rim measurement, and we will confirm the matching diameter from the sizes we mould.

Q2. Do the lids work for hot drinks as well as iced ones?

Yes. The same lid is used across the menu: hot paper cups at the espresso bar and iced drinks in summer both take the same lid without any change to the counter routine. The material and the moulding are identical, so there is nothing extra to order for cold service.

Q3. Can white and black lids be supplied in one order?

Both colours are standard, so you can take one or both and split them across the diameters you run. Tell us how you want the colours divided by size when you confirm the order, and the lids are moulded and packed to that breakdown.

Q4. Will the lids fit paper cups we buy from another supplier?

In most cases yes, because fit is set by the rim measurement rather than the brand, and a lid matched to the rim seats on cups from other paper cup suppliers too. Rim profiles can vary slightly from one producer to the next, so send us the cup you use and we will confirm the diameter to order.

Q5. Can the lids be supplied with our own design or logo?

Custom design and logo printing are part of our standard service, and as a paper cup manufacturer we handle the cups, lids and other packaging on your order together so the branding lines up. Share the artwork and the sizes involved and we will confirm how it is applied across the set.

Q6. How does CPLA compare with your PS and PP lids?

CPLA is the compostable, plant-based option in the range. Our PS lid is a plastic lid built for hot coffee paper cups with several styles to choose from, while the PP lid is a food-grade plastic lid supplied in its own size range. If compostable material is the priority, take the CPLA lid; if you need a particular plastic style or fit, PS and PP cover that.
